What does all this surge protection jibberish mean?

Joule Rating

Think of Joules as the number of surges the power strip can take. Higher rating = longer lasting protection. 1080J is a very good rating in a compact surge protector.

Fireproof MOV

EMI/RFI FIltering

According to IBM, every home or business gets hit every day by at least one surge measuring between 100 and 1,000 volts. The effects of a surge can be subtle or dramatic, depending on the surge’s duration, intensity, and whether the affected devices have adequate protection. Surge protectors protect against spikes and surges. Most include EMI/RFI filtering to decrease line noise and improve audio/video quality. A surge protector should be sufficient for devices with lower inrush currents like TVs, stereos and home computers. If your equipment is mission-critical or your facility experiences frequent outages, a surge protector might not be for you. Surge protectors require less money up front but to ensure mission-critical protection, they should be replaced every few years. Power conditioners not only protect against surges; they protect against brownouts as well. With built-in voltage regulators, they continuously monitor power, then condition it and keep it steady. Power conditioners do not provide EMI/RFI shielding and will not improve video quality or line noise. While power conditioners cost more up front than surge protectors, they’re better suited for higher inrush devices like copiers and laser printers. They are designed for devices that need ongoing power regulation and are often used in factories and hospitals. UPS can do everything a surge protector can do, but its main purpose is to reduce downtime that can cost your business money. Unlike surge protectors, UPS features battery backup that allows equipment to stay up and running through power failures. Like power conditioners, many UPS systems also have voltage regulators that keep voltage at an acceptable level. For a data center or server room, a UPS is your best option. They come in various configurations for both single- and 3-phase applications. Many also include special features, like LCD panels, hot-swappable batteries and energy-saving operation.

🔸 The width is the same as the wall plate - about 3 inches wide.
🔸 The depth is 2 inches from the wall and with its pivoting plugs makes it so useful for any type of plug as well as when the outlet is in a tight space behind furniture. NOTE: although the outlets pivot, you can only plug in when the outlet is facing front or sideways.
🔸 Keep in mind that the outlet sits flush to the top of the wall plate (if mounted into the top outlet) YET hangs below the wall plate about 2 inches. This may be an issue when installing in a kitchen counter outlet where the countertop or backsplash may be in the way. (Wall plates are about 4 inches tall and this adapter is 6 inches). Obviously, it will hang lower if mounted to the bottom outlet but that will also give you access to the top outlet.
🔸 The top front of the adapter has a slight lip to hold something like a charging phone.
🔸 If mounted to the top outlet, the adapter screws into the wall plate and makes the adapter very secure. There is also a small plastic plug to cover up the screw hole and is a very nice touch.

I originally used the Echogear in a different outlet and realized that the outlet was NOT grounded - even though it is a 3-prong receptacle. I moved the Echogear to another outlet which does show as grounded and am using an extension for the plugs until the outlet can be remedied. See pictures. So, thank you Echogear for that information, lol.

I can''t comment on it’s surge protection capabilities or its longevity since I’ve only had it for several weeks. But it is currently performing well and works perfectly for the tight space I needed it for. I will be buying a couple more of these Echogear’s adapters. Update: it was totally unnecessary to turn off the electricity. You don''t even remove the faceplate, only the little screw in the middle of it, and that''s only if you want to secure the device against bumps, tugs, or the weight of multiple cords pulling it out of the wall. I''m a 72-year-old granny, and once I got started I realized just how easy this is. A couple of minutes and a medium-sized blade screwdriver is all you need.

The device is perfect for my needs. I''m not using any adapter plugs, so I can use all six outlets if I need them. (I currently have my TV and converter plugged into one side, and my heated footrest Fellowes Climate Control Footrest (8030901) into the other.) It looks like it could take at least two of the boxy adapter plugs, in the bottom two outlets, and possibly more. Point to be aware of: each of the six outlets swivels independently, but can only be used in either the side or the front position. I liked the fact that every outlet initially was a little difficult to plug in, and that means it should stand up to the test of time of unplugging and plugging in multiple items. Finally I just want to comment on the swiveling plugs, that’s an ingenious idea! Most flat surge protectors I have you need to figure out a way to try to get all your plugs to fit due to their size. Sometimes charging bricks are larger than others causing me to block an outlet due to the fact that’s its simply too large. Not anymore! You can swivel these so you can plug pretty much whatever you want, and it will not interfere with the plug next to it, or above and below it. I love this idea very much, and it should be implemented in pretty much every surge protector IMO.
